Self-Care for Individuals, Families, and Professionals

Pay It Forward

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

W. Churchill

When small acts are multiplied by millions of people, the world can change for the better. You can be a part of that change and in doing so provide a little boost to your own self-care. As you begin to find ways to support your own self-care, consider sharing your experience with others. You may find that hearing a positive experience – especially one that can be accomplished through a simple task – can provide the encouragement needed for someone else to take his or her first small step. Remember a small gesture, whether sharing a self-care tip or just doing a good deed, can go a long way to brighten the day of someone in need. And you will find that it also benefits your own mental health and well-being.

There are many ideas to pay it forward that can be found through a simple internet search, but here are a few to try:

  • Say or gesture “hi” to the first three people you encounter in your day
  • Find opportunities to give kudos - say it or write it (instead of just thinking-it)
  • Run an errand for a family member or individual in need
  • Write a positive comment on your favorite blog, website, or friend’s social media account
  • Try to make sure every person in a group conversation feels included
  • Listen to someone tell you his story
  • Let someone go in front of you in line
  • Send a gratitude email to an individual who deserves more recognition
