In this webcast, they introduce the Psychoeducational Profile, 3rd Edition, also known as the PEP-3. The PEP-3 is an assessment tool used for interdisciplinary evaluation of autism spectrum disorders.

Hi I'm Dr. Barry Grossman. I'm Dr. Ruth Aspy. We're here to introduce you to the PEP-3. It's one of the instruments that's available through OCALI's Lending Library. It's used for interdisciplinary evaluation of autism spectrum disorders. We're often asked "what is the best tool to use for assessing autism spectrum disorders?" Our response is that accurate evaluation depends more on the clinician than the tool. The best instruments are meaningless when those interpreting them do not have the training and experience to make accurate judgments. A skilled evaluation team and quality instruments are the ideal combination. We're going to briefly discuss one of the most useful tools for early childhood students, the PEP-3. The PEP has been in use for over 20 years. The Psychoeducational Profile 3rd edition is a norm referenced assessment tool designed to evaluate the uneven learning strengths and behaviors that often characterize individuals with autism spectrum disorders. It provides information on developmental skill levels and can assist in determining the severity of symptoms related to autism for children who are functioning between the ages of six months to seven years. Normative data for the PEP-3 are based on a sample of children on the autism spectrum and typically developing children. While it is not a direct measurement of intelligence or general cognitive abilities, the PEP-3 provides helpful descriptive information concerning a child's characteristic cognitive pattern including solving problems, relating to environmental stimuli and coping with transition between tasks. The PEP-3 uses a structured play-based format and takes approximately 45 to 90 minutes to administer. Six of the ten subtests are related to broad performance across a variety of tasks while the remaining four address adaptive behaviors demonstrated during the testing session. The PEP-3 is particularly viable when the child is unable to respond to traditional formal cognitive measures. On the table you'll see examples of some of the testing materials used in the PEP-3. There are blocks, play-doh, puzzles, bubbles and sensory toys. These items are used to examine skills such as orienting, visual tracking, receptive and expressive language and turn taking. Those who participate on interdisciplinary evaluation teams will see advantages to using the PEP-3. While it can be difficult to keep track of materials and active students, the activities are short and help to maintain the interest of the child. The PEP-3 is very useful for treatment planning. Results can easily be translated into recommendations for the home and school setting. The scoring process, especially for items that address autistic behavioral characteristics, lead to a better knowledge of the student and contribute to the overall understanding of the diagnostic picture.
