Evaluate and Prepare the Sensory Environment
Sensory challenges in the employment setting may prevent the individual with ASD from being able to do an efficient or effective job. Or may prevent the persons from being able to do the job at all! The first step is to identify what sensory issues may exist, what the person can tolerate, and then determine what accommodations or modifications may be effective.
The Do2Learn JobTIPS website offers ideas and resources to assist the individual with ASD, the employer, and support staff on the job. These resources include the Environmental Demands Rating Worksheet and Dealing with Environmental Demands.
Job Tips also provides short video demonstrations of some skills. For example, deep breathing exercises are demonstrated through a short video that can be viewed on this site.
