Overview

The family plays a vital role in supporting the development, learning and successful participation of young children with disabilities in multiple environments.  In this module, we will describe the strategies that early intervention and preschool teams can use to promote family participation and engagement in the AT selection and implementation process, a process that is linked to improved child outcomes and decreased likelihood of device abandonment.

  1. Describe key components of a family-centered approach to AT assessment and implementation in early childhood and how this process impacts the child's performance and participation.
  2. Describe multiple evidence-based models for delivering AT services in early childhood.
  3. List readily available resources that can be used to increase access to relevant AT information and tools, while promoting ongoing development of professional competence.

Module Authors

Lisa Tebo, M.Ed., OTR/L, ATP

Dr. Tebo has been a pediatric occupational therapist for over 30 years. She has provided services to children in clinical settings, public education, and community programming. In addition, she has served as a consultant to numerous school districts and disability service agencies, providing professional development and training for staff, as well as guidance in program development. She has extensive experience providing both direct and consultative AT services to children and adults through public education and vocational rehabilitative programs. Dr. Tebo is the director of CU OT's Assistive Technology Resource and Education Center.
