Treatment for SB

The major immediate treatment for SB is the closure of the cleft to prevent infection and preserve existing functioning. Some doctors are currently performing surgery in utero to close the cleft and prevent further damage. This surgery is experimental and poses risks to both the mother and the unborn baby. However, benefits include reduction in the occurrence of hydrocephalus, correction or decrease in the Chiari II malformation, and surgery for placement of a shunt to appropriately direct excess cerebro-spinal fluid.

In addition to surgery, individuals with SB may require medication and/or physical therapy. Depending on the level and severity of the defect, a wheelchair, walker, or crutches may also be necessary. As the child grows, ongoing treatment may include physical therapy, additional surgery to manage other physical or structural problems, as well as special education and speech and language therapy to address developmental delays.
